Playoffs for NCAA softball starts here, during the super regionals. With #14 Georgia Tech going against #3 Washington, this would be a tough battle for the Jackets. This was my first time shooting softball so I didn’t know where I should be situated in such a small stadium. Newly made Mewborn stadium let me have a great view with my 300mm which was the antithesis of the regular baseball pictures.
I was allowed to walk to the back of the field and take shots facing towards the batters. This was a different perspective than I usually had, which I tried for two innings. Both teams line up as each member is being introduced to the crowd.
Maryland started the first inning with a home run, the team reacted with bliss. I love seeing and trying to take pictures of people and the emotions involved with being “in the moment.”
I then moved to the other side of the stadium, but without a press pass so was limited to the stands. I was glad though, because I had this angle, a great snatch from what seemed to have been a double play.
Next I tried to focus on the pitchers. With a 40D and a 300mm, I was shooting at approximately 460mm which was completely different from the full frame 5D that I used to shoot with.
Next I decided to get a different view and move directly behind home plate to get a front view of the pitcher. This a cliche shot but there was not much I could do while being in the stands.
While taking pictures behind home plate, someone from Georgia Tech asked me if I was shooting for the Technique – which I was. I was jovially notified that I was indeed suppose to receive a pass good for today and tomorrow. So I headed on the field to take some more close up photos.
When I moved down, I was able to witness our first score, which was a result of a home run!
The game ended with Washington dominating Georgia Tech 7-1.
