Blad was a major part of my trip, I love the technical aspect of film as well as the aesthetic outcome. The colors are truly different, and there is not much need for post processing. I usually am more cautious when shooting film as well, which helps develop my style and allow me to savor every detail. I took some photos at the airport on the way back home to California, here is the Taoyuan Airport as well as my window seat back home during sunrise.

Right after my PhD screening exam, I had a trip planned to visit Taiwan for Melody’s brother’s wedding. I was definitely ready to take my week break from work and stress, but wasn’t excited about the 15 hour difference between Taiwan and Los Angeles. I arrived in Taoyuan International Airport around 9pm Taiwan time and was ready to get to bed, it was a rough 24 hours of stuffy, uncomfortable, economy seating. My first stop was the Seven Eleven in Taipei next to Melody’s father’s place to get some tea leaf eggs as well as light refreshments.

The next day Melody decided to pose for the camera on Yong Kang street, just before heading out to Tainaan (which I will cover on a later post).

Taipei Main station.

A cool compass rose on the floor of Taipei Main station.

We were in a rush to get to Tainaan, getting ready to catch the next train on the High Speed Rail.

Here is Xiao Ding Dong, or a little breakfast place that the Tsai family loves for Taiwan breakfast.

To relive the Tsai family tradition, we all went to Seven Eleven for some slurpees after breakfast.

Random car, parked too close to the building.

Tsai family women looking through old picture albums.

The next day I convinced the Tsai trio to hang out with Wei-Wei, we decided to go to the Taipei Story house. This is just the front yard, which was beautiful.

The Story House.

The sign up front.

Taipei International Flora Exposition.

Later in the day, we went to the Taipei National Palace Museum. Unfortunately Marisa thought the exhibits were boring, and we were not able to take any pictures except for the actual building.

The National Palace Museum.

After the museum, I really wanted to go fishing for shrimp. It was one of the most fun experience and I had to have more.

Yay a shrimp!

Wait, where did the shrimp go?

My family, Melody, and I rode on the Taiwan high speed rail, which was a first for me, to Taizhong. I thought it was cool that you could get to such a far place in half or less the time it takes on regular train. Last time we visited the rail was just about to open.

In Taizhong, we walked around the Taizhong park and I found a heart shaped cut out in this tree.

After the park, we went to the Taizhong “night” market which was extremely busy and ate a lot of food. This was one of my brother’s favorite foods, the huge salt and pepper chicken with Melody as my model.

After the market, we had an hour wait so we decided to get our haircut. But my haircut took way longer then usual and thus caused us to miss our train back. It was a hectic scramble back to the station with our taxi running red lights and speeding. Well we caught the next train back.

The following day we went to the Taipei flower market to look at the local plants and novelties. Here was the first picture I took with a couple in the background of the azaleas.

And a random fish tank that I found with the old school floating fish in the tank.

After the market, we decided to try to take my uncle to Taipei 101, but it was such a bad day that we couldn’t go up to the top. On the way there, a wishing tree was found with many wishes for the new year.

We walked around Warner Village and a special night market was situated inside.

After Taipei 101, we went to meet up with some relatives and eat some shanghai food. This restaurant was famous for their chicken soup and this shows the massive amounts of pots making soup for customers.

Melody had a plan to visit one of her best friends in California, Sammy, at Ximen. So we had a plan to be around that area to still venture around Taiwan as well as be able to fulfill Melody’s request. So we headed off to Long Shan Temple in Taipei. This temple helps answer visitor’s questions with a fortune like message. But instead it relies on praying and chance. Here is the fortune made out to Melody.

Tons of visitors around Asia visit to either ask these questions for the new year.

Afterward, we were waiting for the time to meet up with Sammy so we decided to buy a grapefruit like fruit and eat. Here is the sign to the stand.

Sammy looking around the corner after a failed attempt to bargain with a street vendor. Melody was then used to negotiate to no avail.

And our dinner was at a famous Dragon Dumpling place in Taipei called Ding Tai Fung. I have been to the original store as well as both hosted in Los Angeles. Everytime I visit, I leave with the same satisfied stomach. Here is a picture of a worker trying to assemble this delicious little snack.
