The fourth day of our cruise was more of a cultural experience, with two village visits planned for the day. We were able to meet the mayor of this town, who was kind enough to show us around. He first gave us an introduction of the machete, by sharpening the blade with lime stone.
Some laundry that was being hung out to dry. It is amazing to see that modern day clothes were being imported to this area. In fact the money that tourism brings helps with the procurement of these products.
The village store, which I believe is more for tourism carries the national drink of Inca Kola.
Cute dog.
Red berries that is used for rituals for face painting.
Toddler around the village.
Pet turtle.
The mayor showed us how to harvest yucca plant, which is what I believe to be a derivative of a potato plant. It is a starchy plant that is eaten to replace the carbs that we usually eat. This is the root system, which cuts down a tree in the process. But a branch or part of the tree can be implanted into the earth for start the process of forming another root.
Our classroom visit, which hosted kids from k-6th grade. After 6th grade, the kids opt to go to a larger town to attend highschool.
Our naturalist Jorge showing us the massive lily pads that grow in the Amazon.
The beautiful Amazon lily pad garden, protected by the river people.
Our second village visit, not as intimate but very enlightening.
The kids of the second village fascinated with the westerners.
The Shaman, or Medicine Man, we visited at the second village educated the group on the ancient art of medicine. Although this may not be appreciated in the modern day, the faith and beliefs that come with a medicine man helps the patient with recovery both physically and emotionally.
Sunset during the exit of our village visit.
